How to Choose a Shipping Agent from China to Kenya (2026 Guide)

Top Sea C&A Limited

Compare shipping agents from China to Kenya: costs, sea vs air, consolidation, customs and the new marine cargo insurance rule. Use our checklist.

If you import from China, shipping agents from China to Kenya can be the difference between a smooth delivery and cartons stuck at the port. This guide covers what a good agent actually does, how to compare them, and a new insurance rule every importer now needs to know about.
If you already know what you’re shipping, you can get a shipping quote and compare it against the checklist below.
What does a shipping agent from China to Kenya do?
A shipping agent coordinates the whole move so you don’t have to manage each handover yourself. A typical China-to-Kenya job includes:
  • Collection from your supplier in Yiwu, Guangzhou or another hub
  • Warehouse receiving and checking before anything ships
  • Consolidation of cartons from several suppliers
  • Export documents and booking with the shipping line or airline
  • Customs clearance in Kenya
  • Delivery to a warehouse or your address
Not every agent covers every step. Some only book freight, and others handle the full chain. Ask which steps are included before comparing prices.
Sea freight or air freight from China to Kenya?

Sea freightAir freight
Best for | Heavy or bulky stock, planned restocking | Urgent, small or high-value cargo
Pricing basis | Per CBM (LCL) or per container (FCL) | Chargeable weight (actual or volumetric, whichever is higher)
Speed | Slower | Faster
Cost per kilo | Lower | Higher
Topsea’s own lane runs roughly 19–45 days, depending on method and route. Whatever agent you choose, ask for the expected timeline in writing.
Why cargo consolidation matters if you buy from several suppliers
If you buy from more than one supplier, shipping each order separately gets expensive. Cargo consolidation lets the agent receive goods from several suppliers, check them, and pack them into one shipment. Ask any agent about their warehouse location, how long they hold cargo for free, and whether they inspect goods before they sail.
What does shipping from China to Kenya cost?
Cost depends on cargo volume or weight, shipping method, goods type, and Kenyan duties and taxes. Use a shipping cost calculator for a planning range, then ask for a written quote. Check that it separates:
  • Freight charges
  • Origin charges (collection, warehouse handling)
  • Customs clearance fees
  • Duties and taxes (set by the goods, not the agent)
  • Delivery and any port or storage charges
  • Marine cargo insurance
A low headline rate that leaves out clearance, delivery or insurance is not actually cheaper.
Marine cargo insurance: the 2026 rule every importer must know
This is the part many importers miss. Kenya’s rules on cargo insurance have changed, and they now affect whether your goods can clear.
What the rule says. Section 16A of the Marine Insurance Act, added in 2017, requires anyone with an insurable interest in marine cargo to place that insurance with a locally licensed insurer. Enforcement has been uneven, partly because many international suppliers bundle insurance with freight, so importers kept using foreign insurers.
What is changing now. In its notice titled “Enforcement of Marine Cargo Insurance”, KRA says that from 1 November 2026 all cargo imported into Kenya must be covered by a valid Digital Marine Cargo Insurance policy from an IRA-licensed insurer. The certificate must go through the digital system before the importer files a customs declaration, and consignments that fail the requirement will be blocked from clearance.
How to get it. Importers or their licensed clearing agents can start through insurer web portals, mobile apps, the KIFWA portal or eCitizen, and the system issues the digital certificate after payment is confirmed. You can also compare marine cargo insurance quotes from licensed insurers on Getcovered Kenya before you buy.
Why this is also real protection. Marine cargo cover is more than a customs formality. It protects your goods against loss or damage during transit by sea freight or air freight, from any cause not specifically excluded. Read the exclusions and the claims process before you buy, and confirm your insurer is IRA-licensed.
A practical tip: buy the certificate before your cargo arrives, and send it to your agent early. Late insurance is now a clearance problem, not just a paperwork problem.
Customs clearance in Kenya
Customs clearance needs accurate documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or airway bill, and now the digital marine cargo insurance certificate. Mismatched descriptions or values are a common cause of delays. Ask your agent who files the declaration and what happens if there’s a query.
Checklist: questions to ask any shipping agent before you pay
  1. Which steps are included: collection, consolidation, freight, clearance, delivery?
  2. Where is your China warehouse, and do you inspect and photograph cargo on arrival?
  3. How is my cargo priced (CBM, weight, container), and what is not in the quote?
  4. What is the realistic transit time for my shipping method?
  5. Who handles customs clearance in Kenya?
  6. Will you help me get the digital marine cargo insurance certificate before arrival?
  7. What happens if cargo is damaged, delayed or missing, and who do I contact?
  8. Can I speak to a real person on WhatsApp or by phone, in Kenya and in China?
